20/10: Zurich Opera's The Greek Passion
Zurich - Switzerland - With Bohuslav Martinů’s “The Greek Passion”, the Zurich Opera House will be adding a work to its repertoire on November 9 that received its world premiere on this very same stage back in 1961. In this deeply impressive work, which centres on a village production of The Passion Play that becomes more and more of a reality for the actors involved, Martinů deftly combines elements of Greek folklore and Greek-Orthodox church music with a genuinely Czech musical idiom. The production is in the hands of renowned opera director Nicolas Brieger (in his first-ever Zurich Opera House production), while set and costume design are by Hans-Dieter Schaal and Jorge Jara. The soloists are led by Roberto Saccà as Manolios, Emily Magee as the widowed Katerina and Alfred Muff as the priest Grigoris. At the rostrum will be young Norwegian conductor Eivind Gullberg-Jensen, who, following his acclaimed debut with “Peer Gynt” last year, returns to Zurich for his first premiere performance. Premiere on November 9th with further performances on November 12, 15, 21, 23, 27 and 29 and on December 3. Use this link for further information onZurich Opera . . . .
