During July in the Loire Valley
Revolutionary Sound and Light Show at Cléry-Saint-André
- New Sound and Light Show at Cléry-Saint-André; July 16-17, 23-24-25, 29-30 & 31, 2010. Show starts around 10:15 pm; seats available as of 9:45 pm. - The storming of the Bastille and the French Revolution, which led to the Declaration of the Rights of Man, was a tipping point in world history and one of the most significant events to take place in Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire. - This July, the sound and light show at Cléry-Saint-André will showcase the tumultuous, ground-breaking period, with a spotlight on the women - the common folk and aristocrats - whose lives were to be changed forever. The Enchanted River': New show at the Château of Azay-le-Rideau -
Every evening in July and August, from 9 pm to midnight - For a change of pace and of scene, head for the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, one of the most beautiful and magical in the Loire Valley, for an enchanted walk through the grounds of the château at night. Special lighting, sound and musical effects will accompany you, among them projected images of weird and wonderful creatures. In this fabulous kingdom of animals you will meet up with some strange sights: a monumental hippogramophone, a ballet of amphibians... This poetic digitally-enhanced show is a treat for the eyes and includes references to the five continents, making it ideal for visitors from abroad.  Note: a combined ticket is available for show and château visit, which can be used separately.  Loire Valley,  France

The Roman Opera Festival, Rome
- The Roman Opera Festival has one of the most outstanding settings – equal in history and atmosphere to Verona’s arena -- in the Ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla. Operas this year are Aida and Rigoletto and the ballet is Romeo and Juliet.  www.operafest.com   Caracalla,  Italy

Travel by tram in 1919
style - In addition to sightseeing buses and scenic cruises, visitors should also try a ride through the city on a historic tram. The company Oy Stadin Ratikat Ab has teamed up with Helsinki City Transport to offer this unique historical experience this summer. The fully restored open-top tram dates back to 1919 and will run on weekends from 15 May to 19 August. Rides last for around 15 minutes and depart from the Market Square (tram stop 1) every half hour between 10am and 5pm. The tour takes in Kruununhaka, Kaisaniemi, the Central Railway Station and Aleksanterinkatu.  Finland

Festival Puccini,  Torre del Lago
- A beautiful new 3200-seat amphitheater is the venue for the 52nd Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago, near Viareggio in western Tuscany. The setting is close to Villa Mausoleo where Puccini is buried. Operas on the 2010 program are: La Fanciulla del West, Turandot, Madama Butterfly and Tosca, in addition to three ballet performances: Carmina Burana, Le Villi and Romeo and Juliet.

This marks the 88th year of Verona’s International Opera Festival, held in the First-century Roman arena, the best preserved Roman amphitheater in Italy. The 2010 program of five operas includes Turandot, Aida, Carmen, Madame Butterfly and Il Trovatore. Somerset House 10th Anniversary
- Somerset House will celebrate its 10th anniversary this summer with a spectacular programme of music, visual arts, fashion, dance, opera and film. The opening up of Somerset House, one of London’s most important 18th century buildings, has been one of the great success stories of the last decade, transformed from its days as a government office to a vibrant cultural hub for London and now visited by around 1.5 million people a year. Jazz in the Garden Returns
- The National Gallery's popular summer tradition, is already in full swing. In its 10th consecutive season, the series continues with weekly performances through September 10. The free concerts feature an array of jazz artists performing a range of styles—from swing to progressive to Latin—every Friday evening in the Sculpture Garden, rain or shine. The Surreal House  - Barbican Art Gallery
- Featuring art, film and architecture, The Surreal House presents the individual dwelling as a place of wonder, desire and foreboding. The haunted house, the cabinet of curiosities, the ruined castle, the cage, the cave, the box, the labyrinth, the bell jar and the womb are among the uniquely surreal habitats explored.  London,  England

Chartres en Llumieres
 - A musical visit to Chartres by night.  Starting on 23rd April, each evening at nightfall, twenty four of the finest monuments in Chartres will be highlighted through light and music. Listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO and famous throughout the world for the incomparable splendour of its stained glass windows, the cathedral of Chartres will be showcased as never before. Shapes and images will appear throughout the city and building façades will display colours, scenes and script. The scenography will reveal the architecture of each monument and is sure to go down in the history of the town. The light show will end on 17th and 18th September with the Festival of Light!   Chartres,  France

Through October in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Bowl 2010 Season Opens
- Live music venues simply don’t get much better than the Santa Barbara Bowl. The 4,562-seat amphitheater is nestled in Santa Barbara’s foothills and there’s not a bad seat in the house—some even grant ocean views. It’s a long-standing favorite of music fans and international rock stars alike. Case in point: Radiohead front man Thom Yorke chose Santa Barbara as one of five cities on his eight-gig Atoms for Peace (Yorke, Flea, Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker and Nigel Godrich) mini-tour. Tickets for the sure-to-sell-out April 17 show go on sale March 6. Other 2010 shows recently announced include Alicia Keys (April 7), Sugarland (April 25) and Carole King/James Taylor (May 18). The 2010 season will run through October and acts will continue to be announced as summer approaches.  Santa Barbara, California

Since 1710, the first European porcelain manufacture has produced the world-famous Meissen porcelain (invented by Johann Friedrich Boettger on behalves of August the Strong, King of Saxony) in its traditional form. Table sets, figurines and accessories are still designed, processed and artistically decorated by hand. In 2010 (April 18 - October 1) the Meissen porcelain manufacture will celebrate 300 years of its existence. Therefore visitors can enjoy several exhibitions in Meissen and Dresden with limited editions of the world famous porcelain, along with celebratory events. Dresden,  Germany

Oberammergau -
A spiritual delight in southern Bavaria is Oberammergau, about one hour south of Munich. The town is already rehearsing for the decennial Passion Play in 2010. This world renowned event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, many of them from the US.  Oberammergau,  Germany

Marriage in the Movies
-  presents some of the most memorable wedding moments captured on film as we showcase gowns and accessories from the big (and small) screens. The exhibition features wedding dresses worn by Keira Knightley, Helena Bonham-Carter and Meryl Streep, examines the iconic work of Oscar-winning costume designers, and explores the history of the wedding gown from its symbolism and tradition to fashion and style. While all the wedding gowns on display were made especially for the screen, they also represent the story and the style of the time – from the 1770s in Frankenstein and the late eighteenth century in The Duchess, to the early 1900s in Howard’s End.  The National Museum of Costume - Edinburgh,  Scotland

The Royal Stables of the Château du Rivau in Touraine
- Travel to the era of knights, tournaments and legends.  Famous for its fairytale gardens, the Château du Rivau now offers the opportunity to visit its royal stables. Seven audiovisual narratives are continuously projected onto the vaulted walls of the stables (the oldest in France) allowing you to relive the rich equestrian past of the Château du Rivau and the stables where the war horses of the kings of France were reared. The art of equestrianism is recreated from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, through the magic of moving images and sound, under filtered hot light. The journey-performance in the legendary stable will introduce you to Pegasus, Unicorn, Bucephalus and their mythical sagas.  At the Chateau du Rivau - Touraine,  France

The Garden of Antonin at the Chateau de Valencay - A discovery walk in an aromatic scented garden.
  On the 20th March, the château de Valençay will open the doors to a new garden: the garden of Antonin. Distributed over 600 m², this garden has been created with a culinary theme in mind, and will contain more than 300 culinary aromatic species. The garden is dedicated to Antonin Carême, the greatest chef in the 19th century who worked at the service of Talleyrand for 12 years. The 10-stage olfactory walk around the garden offers the visitor the opportunity to distinguish the origins of various flavours. This new garden situated in the château grounds will breathe new life into the 18th century French gardens and is a complement to the new feature of 2009, "the floral chess board" boasting giant multi-coloured mosaics of country flowers. The Little Mermaid, Always and Forever
- Copenhagen's beloved Little Mermaid is taking a vacation from her post in the harbor and traveling to World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Some interesting things will go on in Copenhagen while she's away. In exchange for the Little Mermaid, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been commissioned to create a multimedia art installation around her usual perch at Langelinie. It will include a 24-hour video link to the Little Mermaid in Shanghai so people can keep tabs on her. At the same time, the Little Mermaid's "sister"-a copy of the statue made by its sculptor, Edvard Eriksen - will be on display in Tivoli Gardens beginning in April.

Into Modern Times
- The railways as the driving force for Germany on its way into modern times will be the central topic of the exhibition "Die Strecke des Adlers" (The Journey of the Adler) in the Museum for Industrial.  Celebrate 175 years of German Railway and experience unforgettable railway nostalgia in one of Europe’s most beautiful sceneries. Center of the festivities are the cities of Nuremberg and Fuerth in Bavaria, which the first railway connected on its maiden voyage. Locomotive and vehicle parades as well as a comprehensive jubilee exhibition in the Deutsche Bahn Museum are some of the exciting highlights that can be included in your itinerary this year.  Nuremberg,  Germany

The Norton Simon Museum presents Hiroshige: Visions of Japan,
an exhibition of nearly 200 prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858), one of the most celebrated and prolific artists of his time. Drawn from the Museum’s extensive collection of Japanese woodblock-prints, the exhibition features works from Hiroshige’s seminal series Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, among others. All together, the images offer visitors a glimpse into everyday life in 19th-century Japan, with its festivals, rituals, and sublime natural beauty.    Pasadena,  California

Launch of London Cycle Hire
scheme - The Mayor of London and Transport for London will set up and operate a London Cycle Hire scheme. Bicycles will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The London Cycle Hire scheme will help to alleviate congestion on the Tube and buses in London. The scheme will launch with 6,000 hire bicycles based in the nine London boroughs and several Royal Parks that make up London's zone one travel area, and are expected to generate around 40,000 extra cycle trips a day in central London - London,  England

Bohemia Jazz Fest
- Bohemia Jazz Fest is an open-air festival taking place in mid July on beautiful medieval squares in seven cities throughout the Czech Republic, featuring the top jazz artists from around the world such as Stanley Clarke Quartet, Yellow Jackets, Roy Hargrove Quintet and many others.  All concerts are free of charge.  Czech Republic

50th International Jazz Festival -
The International Jazz Festival "Jazz à Juan," the oldest in Europe, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Antibes Juan-les-Pins, the capital of jazz, has chosen to pay tribute to the great musicians who have performed since 1960 in the legendary setting of the Gould pine grove. - Martina Francat is a summer opera festival held in the south eastern Italian town of Martina Franca in the Apulia region. Musical “Cabaret” Back In Berlin - “Cabaret”,
the finest tribute to the Berlin of the 1930s, is returning to the stage in Berlin. For seven weeks beginning on July 15, the Kit Kat girls, party-girl Sally Bowles, and the shady master of ceremonies will reappear at the Tipi by the Federal Chancellery. Over two weeks in the summer, Music Fest Perugia provides a challenging but inviting environment for young performers aimed at keeping the classical repertoire vibrant and alive. July 23rd through 25th in Wales
Adding more good cheer to the cheerful landscape which has returned to its pre-industrial era greenery, the Valleys will host the annual Big Cheese Festival at Caerphilly Castle, Britain’s second largest castle (after Windsor) with its leaning tower, more askew than Pisa’s.  The weekend features street entertainers, living history encampments, music, minstrels, troubadours, fire eating, falconry and of course Caerphilly cheese. The International Lucerne Blue Balls Festival
presents a cornucopia of music styles on the shores of lake Lucerne.  Over 9 days, more than 100,000 people will attend this one of a kind festival in the heart of Switzerland.  Lucerne,  Switzerland

July 24th to September 11th in Bern
While developing his theory of relativity and revolutionizing humanity's world view, Albert Einstein lived in Bern. The open-air performances of “Einstein” will take place on Bern’s own mountain, the Gurten.  The park in its lush hilltop setting is an ideal local recreational area on the edge of town, easy to reach with the panoramic funicular. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy a truly breathtaking view of the Alps, of Bern and its surroundings. Switzerland

Richard Wagner Festival, Bayreuth -
The Bayreuth Wagner Festival attracts visitors from around the world with its exceptional productions of Richard Wagner's operas. Wagner's celebrated works, including the "The Ring of the Nibelung" as well as "Tristan and Isolde", are performed in alternation at the festival theater, which was built according to Wagner’s plans especially for the event. July 27th to August 14th in Basel
Im Fluss
- In the middle of the summer, two highlights meet in the heart of Basel:  The Rhine and culture.  Over a period of three weeks, concerts are held on a float anchored close to the Mittlere Brucke while the sun sets slowly over the City.  Not to be missed:  the Swiss National Day celebrations, which are always marked in Basel by a large fireworks display over the Rhine on the evening of July 31st.  Basel,  Switzerland

Take tea on the terrace at Buckingham Palace
- Specially created for the eight-week Summer Opening, the café welcomes visitors at the end of their tour of the State Rooms as they walk from the Bow Room into the Palace garden. July 29th to August 10th in Macerata -
Sferisterio Opera Festival, Ri
valing Verona’s and Rome’s for the grandeur of its setting, this opera festival in Macerata, near the Adriatic shore between Asissi and Ancona, is set in the stadium-like Sferisterio. Built in 1823, it is considered one of the finest examples of the late European Neoclassical Style, with 56 Doric columns supporting its box seats. Built for sporting events, the Sferisterio hosted its first opera – Aida – in 1921.The 2010 season brings Faust and La Forza del Destino to its stage. Performances begin at p.m., so spectators can enjoy the view as dusk turns to dark. Fun-fair "Sommerdom", Hamburg -
Hamburg’s Dom is the biggest public festival in the north of Germany. For one month the Heiligengeistfeld near the famous Reeperbahn is full of colorful booths, nostalgic carousels and a lot of high-tech-rides. This event is a mix of both beer festival and funfair entertaining young and old.  Hamburg,  Germany

July 31st to August 7th in Wales
The Valleys’ former steel works town of Ebbw Vale located 45 minutes outside of Cardiff, hosts the be-all-and-end-all of Welsh cultural events, The National Eisteddfod. Dating back to 1176, the Eisteddfod (the Welsh word for sitting or gathering pronounced Eye-STETH-fod) is the pinnacle of a Welsh cultural event, bringing together literature, music, dance, poetry, theatre and visual arts all through the medium of the Welsh language. Oslo Chamber Music Festival
- In August every year, world class chamber ensembles and soloist gather in the Norwegian capital.  Through Oslo Chamber Music Festival they wish to spread chamber music to a broader audience than those who usually attend these concerts.  The main man behind Oslo Chamber Music Festival is Norway’s acclaimed violinist Arve Tellefsen. He was the initiator of the first festival in 1989. Since then Oslo Chamber Music Festival has been an annual event, with Arve Tellefsen as artistic director.  Over ten summer days, Oslo’s inhabitants and visitors can enjoy top-class chamber music from Norwegian and international musicians. In addition to pleasing the ear with beautiful music, Oslo Chamber Music Festival is also something for the eye. The festival gives you a chance to see some of Oslo’s most beautiful concert venues, including places that are not usually open for the public. Historical gems such as the Akershus Castle Church, the University Aula, Gamle Logen, Oscarshall, the chapel at the Royal Palace and the medieval church Gamle Aker have been used through the festival’s first 20 years.  Oslo,  Norway

Oberbaumbrücke Open-Air Gallery
 - The open-air gallery at the Oberbaumbrücke bridge will be the site of an outdoor exhibition. More than a hundred artists will be displaying sculptures, photographs, paintings, collages, and graphic works that will be for sale on both sides of the bridge. A 120 meter-long giant screen will also engage the visitors, inviting them to be artistically active themselves.  Berlin,  Germany

The Great British Beer Festival at Earl's Court

200 years of original Oktoberfest in Munich - an anniversary to celebrate,
  To take advantage of the warmer weather, the Bavarians moved up the date of Oktoberfest in Munich to September. Opening day this year is Friday, September 17th and runs through Monday, October 4th.  Visitors are invited to enjoy beer gardens outside the tents and the stroll over "die Wiesn" long into the warm nights. Special anniversary happenings will commence with a historic reconstruction of the original festival using an antique Oktoberfest tent and exhibition of historical fun fair attractions. Horse races, also part of the royal fete, will be held daily. The official tapping of the first beer barrel will be celebrated on Saturday the 18th at noon.  Those who partake in the festival’s last day will have easy access. Only a limited number of beer tent seats are reservation only, and the vast first majority are available on a first come first serve basis. The festival tents open at 10:00 a.m. on weekdays and close at 11:00 p.m. On the weekends the tents open at 9:00 a.m. Beer is served until 10:30 p.m. Admission to the Oktoberfest is free.
